Astrology: Fall Equinox, September 22, 2018 9:54pm

All Systems Go
Two days before a full moon in emotional Pisces, this is a clean, intense chart where all planets are tightly interconnected with multiple aspects and most of the aspects have progressively gone exact over the previous two weeks. After an intensely retrograde summer punctuated by three powerful eclipses, the haze is slowly lifting as a more forward looking energy falls into place, especially when Pluto stations direct on September 30, leaving just two planets, Uranus and Neptune, in retrograde motion. Since the Pluto-Uranus square will be reactivated in the winter, this quarter looks like one of the easiest in a long time. Overall, it is quite an upbeat chart with three minor grand trines closely overlapping within the space of a single hemisphere. There are two closely situated T-squares, but Mars, which has recently entered individualistic Aquarius, has two easy aspects that connect them with a stabilizing influence.

The Spirit Hovers Over the Waters
Pluto-Neptune-Jupiter minor grand trine – This gives an idealistic, practical, creative energy, conducive to solving problems in an original and productive manner. Spiritual transformation is favorized.
Cool and Connected
Moon-Uranus-Saturn Minor Grand Trine. Uranus has retrograde to the Taurus/Aries cusp. This is kind of a prelude to an upcoming Neptune - Uranus - Saturn Minor Grand Trine. Fluid communication, creative and productive discussions, balanced relations.
Live Long and Prosper
Moon – Venus - Saturn Minor Grand Trine. Venus has recently entered passionate Scorpio. Friendly, stable relations, health, prosperity.

Some Like it Hot
Mars- Uranus – Venus T-square. This T-square is about impulsive, unusual passions and attractions that probably are not as good as they seemed at first. This could have an addictive, obsessive nature. Due to a Mars retrograde in the Summer, the Mars-Uranus square has been in effect for almost three times as long as usual and it can be quite a volatile aspect that brings about unexpected difficulties.

Arrested Development
Saturn – Sun/Mercury – Chiron T-square. Due to Chiron and Saturn retrogrades, the Sun-Saturn-Chiron solsticial and equinoctial synchronicity is still in effect for one last time as Saturn moves away from the Winter solsticial point. One more opportunity to heal old wounds, past developmental traumas in order to gain a more confident personality. Mercury has just entered fair, open Libra. Sun conjunct Mercury gives clear, dynamic thinking while Mars trine Chiron and sextile Sun/Mercury should help stabilize this sensitive T-square configuration and alleviate the internalized anger and frustration that can lead to depression. This is the tightest configuration on the chart, all aspects being within three degrees.

Earlier in the year, the more radical, revolutionary energies that marked the last few years finely gave way to less conflicted ones, with new directions opening up; but the summer time may have been a time to let the dust settle. The fall quarter, and the rest of the calendar year seems an exceptional period for productive work in new directions which should intensify when Jupiter moves into Sagittarius in November. Although the revolutionary Uranus-Pluto square reappears in the Winter, overall, this could be seen as a beneficial, easy period before things intensify in a big way by 2020.

Fourth Year!

The fourth year has passed and in the past year we have continued to present a steady and diverse flow of theosophical topics – mostly selected extracts and compilations from classic spiritual texts, with occasional forays into original writing; and we have been active on Facebook and Twitter as well. We have continued with a number of regular features: William Q. Judge on Karma and Reincarnation, Theosophical Basics with Blavatsky, Throught the Gates of Gold commentary and a quarterly astrology article. Some of these features are due to end fairly soon, so there will be some new features and most likely a return of the book review feature.
It was quite a busy year, besides this blog, I’ve been working on other projects on other web sites, all useful projects, that I feel will bring good fruits:
Gems from the East
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/theosophy/mining-the-gems-from-the-east-and-west-t1524.html#last
Isis Unveiled
https://nexus.universaltheosophy.com/articles/exploring-blavatskys-isis-unveiled-conclusion/
Blavatsky News
https://blavatskynews2.blogspot.com/

In many ways the number four represents the fruition of a manifestation process, and so what does that signify for the Montreal Theosophy Project? I would like to expand – expand the scope of the blog with more original writing and a wider variety of topics including more contemporary ones – additionally,  resume public lectures and publish more elaborate writings as well. Thank you for the interest and please stay tuned…

I will recruit for myself and you as I go,
I will scatter myself among men and women as I go,
I will toss a new gladness and roughness among them,
Whoever denies me it shall not trouble me,
Whoever accepts me he or she shall be blessed and shall bless me. (Walt Whitman, Song of the Open Road, 5)

Through the Gates of Gold Chapter 4 The Meaning of Pain, Part 4

This chapter is closely related the chapter I, The Search for Pleasure. In part 4, the idea that pleasure and pain form a dichotomy that needs to be transcended, to go beyond the duality of opposites, is further explored:
“One definite lesson learned by all acute sufferers will be of the greatest service to us in this consideration. In intense pain a point is reached where it is indistinguishable from its opposite, pleasure. This is indeed so, but few have the heroism or the strength to suffer to such a far point. It is as difficult to reach it by the other road. Only a chosen few have the gigantic capacity for pleasure which will enable them to travel to its other side. Most have but enough strength to enjoy and to become the slave of the enjoyment. Yet man has undoubtedly within himself the heroism needed for the great journey; else how is it that martyrs have smiled amid the torture? How is it that the profound sinner who lives for pleasure can at last feel stir within himself the divine afflatus?”

Again the importance of freeing oneself of attachments, superstitions, dogmas and delusions is stressed, with further ideas on the inner god:
“For the noble soul of the man, that potential king which is within us all, knows full well that this household idol may be cast down and destroyed at any moment, — that it is without finality in itself, without any real and absolute life. And he has been content in his possession, forgetting that anything possessed can only by the immutable laws of life be held temporarily. He has forgotten that the infinite is his only friend; he has forgotten that in its glory is his only home, — that it alone can be his god. There he feels as if he is homeless; but that amid the sacrifices he offers to his own especial idol there is for him a brief resting-place; and for this he clings passionately to it.”

The problem of identifying the transcendent in the lower self rather than the higher self is discussed:
“The strange and mysterious fact remains unexplained as yet, that man in so deluding himself is merely interpreting Nature backwards and putting into the words of death the meaning of life.
For that man does indeed hold within him the infinite, and that the ocean is really in the cup, is an incontestable truth; but it is only so because the cup is absolutely non-existent. It is merely an experience of the infinite, having no permanence, liable to be shattered at any instant.”

We see an echo of the Platonic notion of the body as a prison as well as the oriental notions of illusion or emptiness:
“It is in the claiming of reality and permanence for the four walls of his personality, that man makes the vast blunder which plunges him into a prolonged series of unfortunate incidents, and intensifies continually the existence of his favorite forms of sensation. Pleasure and pain become to him more real than the great ocean of which he is a part and where his home is; he perpetually knocks himself painfully against these walls where he feels, and his tiny self oscillates within his chosen prison.”

Swedenborg's Seven Stages of Spiritual Regeneration

The chart below is adapted from “Seven are the steps to Heaven: A Comparative Study of Swedenborg and Simnani”-  Cassie Lipowitz, The New Philosophy, July–December 2014
Emanuel Swedenborg’s (1688–1772) exegesis of Genesis 1:1–2:3, in which he describes the stages of spiritual regeneration can be found in Arcana Coelestia, trans.John Clowes, (West Chester, PA:Swedenborg Foundation, 1998), §16-85

Genesis – Days of Creation Microcosmic Correspondence Psycho-Spiritual Meaning
1-On the first day of creation, God creates heaven and earth Heaven symbolizes the internal man, while earth symbolizes the external man.
As the beginning of a separation of (and battle between) opposites—the two most basic of which are good and evil.
2-On the second day, a "vault" is created to separate the waters above and the waters below "The internal man is called an ‘expanse’; the knowledges which are in the internal man are called ‘the waters above the expanse’; and the memory-knowledges of the external man are called ‘the waters beneath the expanse.’" "Remains" (knowledge of faith that exists within the internal man) begin to show themselves more fully within the individual’s field of awareness.
3-On the third day, dry lands are formed that produce vegetation.
When the "earth," or man, has been thus prepared to receive celestial seeds from the Lord, and to produce something of what is good and true, then the Lord first causes some tender thing to spring forth, which is called the "tender herb"; then something more useful, which again bears seed in itself, and is called the "herb yielding seed"; and at length something good which becomes fruitful, and is called the "tree bearing fruit, whose seed is in itself," each according to its own kind. The "herb yielding seed" may be seen as the seed of true faith, which has begun to readily grow in the individual in this third state. This faith brings forth repentance in the seeker, as well as works of piety and devotion. now the individual understands "…that the higher, God-given knowledge about truth and good reaches him from the inner man. There is now a readiness to receive higher insights that root themselves in man and then grow."
4-This faith is further perfected on the fourth day, at which time two lights, the sun and the moon, as well as the stars, are created. These celestial bodies represent divine love and faith; the sun corresponds with love and the celestial, which, in turn, illuminates the moon (faith). At this stage, it may be said that the individual’s faith is exponentially deepened, since it is now illuminated by love. .. now, the individual has begun to realize that all goodness, love, and faith, arise not from himself, but from God. This reorientation—insofar as it instills in the seeker a realization of the inseparability between wisdom (associated with knowledge and understanding) and good works (associated with the will and love)—is a crucial turning point.
5- The creation of the birds of the air and the fish of the sea that arise on the fifth day. Now that he is vivified by love and faith, and believes that the Lord works all the good that he does and all the truth that he speaks, he is compared first to the ‘creeping things of the water,’ and to the ‘fowls which fly above the earth,’ and also to ‘beasts,’ which are all animate things, and are called ‘living souls.’" The individual, illuminated by the "twin lights" of faith, is now truly "alive." As such, he or she becomes "animated"—a "living soul" in a deeply symbolic and meaningful sense… animate things, and are called ‘living souls.’" In this fifth state, the inner man comes to the fore, now dominating the outer, and thus, knowledge and wisdom flow much more freely through him.
6-On the sixth day, it is said that humanity—both the male and the female—are created in the image of God. It symbolizes a joining or "marriage" of two opposites: the male, representing understanding and wisdom, and the female, representing love and will. The union of these two, created in the divine image, thus signifies a "marriage" of the faculties within the individual who has reached the sixth stage. Thus, on the sixth day, the individual becomes a "spiritual" human being, image" of God,
7- On the seventh and final day, God rests, satisfied with the creation.
This constitutes the highest state of perfection for the individual—a state in which there is complete union between his or her inner and outer selves.
Now, completely aligned with God’s will, so as to be scarcely differentiated from it, the celestial human being finds rest and peace: "Such is the quality of the celestial man that he acts not according to his own desire, but according to the good pleasure of the Lord, which is his ‘desire.’ Thus he enjoys internal peace and happiness."

The Ecology of Karma and Reincarnation

In 1889, with his Universal Applications of Doctrine, Judge delivered another major piece on Karma and Reincarnation and cemented his commitment to a philosophical exploration of these major theosophical topics.

Let us look at Karma. It must be applied not only to the man but also to the Cosmos, to the globe upon which he lives. You know that, for the want of an English word, the period of one great day of evolution is called a Manwantara, or the reign of one Manu. These eternally succeed each other. In other words, each one of us is a unit, or a cell, if you please, in the great body or being of Manu, and just as we see ourselves making Karma and reincarnating for the purpose of carrying off Karma, so the great being Manu dies at the end of a Manwantara, and after the period of rest reincarnates once more, the sum total of all that we have made him — or it. And when I say "we", I mean all the beings on whatever plane or planet who are included in that Manwantara. Therefore this Manwantara is just exactly what the last Manwantara made it, and so the next Manwantara after this — millions of years off — will be the sum or result of this one, plus all that have preceded it.

How much have you thought upon the effect of Karma upon the animals, the plants, the minerals, the elemental beings? Have you been so selfish as to suppose that they are not affected by you? Is it true that man himself has no responsibility upon him for the vast numbers of ferocious and noxious animals, for the deadly serpents and scorpions, the devastating lions and tigers, that make a howling wilderness of some corners of the earth and terrorize the people of India and elsewhere? It cannot be true. But as the Apostle of the Christians said, it is true that the whole of creation waits upon man and groans that he keeps back the enlightenment of all. What happens when, with intention, you crush out the life of a common croton bug? Well, it is destroyed and you forget it. But you brought it to an untimely end, short though its life would have been. Imagine this being done at hundreds of thousands of places in the State. Each of these little creatures had life and energy; each some degree of intelligence. The sum total of the effects of all these deaths of small things must be appreciable. If not, then our doctrines are wrong and there is no wrong in putting out the life of a human being.

Let us go a little higher, to the bird kingdom and that of four-footed beasts. Everyday in the shooting season in England vast quantities of birds are killed for sport, and in other places such intelligent and inoffensive animals as deer. These have a higher intelligence than insects, a wider scope of feeling. Is there no effect under Karma for all these deaths? And what is the difference between wantonly killing a deer and murdering an idiot? Very little to my mind. Why is it, then, that even delicate ladies will enjoy the recital of a bird or deer hunt? It is their Karma that they are the descendants of long generations of Europeans who some centuries ago, with the aid of the church, decided that animals had no souls and therefore could be wantonly slaughtered. The same Karma permits the grandson of the Queen of England who calls herself the defender of the faith — of Jesus — to have great preparations made for his forth-coming visit to India to the end that he shall enjoy several weeks of tiger-hunting, pig-sticking, and the destruction of any and every bird that may fly in his way.

We therefore find ourselves ground down by the Karma of our national stem, so that we are really almost unable to tell what thoughts are the counterfeit presentments of the thoughts of our forefathers, and what self-born in our own minds.

Let us now look at Reincarnation, Devachan, and Karma. It has been the custom of theosophists to think upon these subjects in respect only to the whole man — that is to say, respecting the ego.

But what of its hourly and daily application? If we believe in the doctrine of the One Life, then every cell in these material bodies must be governed by the same laws. Each cell must be a life and have its karma, devachan, and reincarnation. Every one of these cells upon incarnating among the others in our frame must be affected by the character of those it meets; and we make that character. Every thought upon reaching its period dies. It is soon reborn, and coming back from its devachan it finds either bad or good companions provided for it. Therefore every hour of life is fraught with danger or with help. How can it be possible that a few hours a week devoted to theosophic thought and action can counteract — even in the gross material cells — the effect of nearly a whole week spent in indifference, frivolity, or selfishness? This mass of poor or bad thought will form a resistless tide that shall sweep away all your good resolves at the first opportunity.

This will explain why devoted students often fail. They have waited for a particular hour or day to try their strength, and when the hour came they had none. If it was anger they had resolved to conquer, instead of trying to conquer it at an offered opportunity they ran away from the chance so as to escape the trial; or they did not meet the hourly small trials that would, if successfully passed, have given them a great reserve of strength, so that no time of greater trial would have been able to overcome them.

Now as to the theory of the evolution of the macrocosm in its application to the microcosm, man.

The hermetic philosophy held that man is a copy of the greater universe; that he is a little universe in himself, governed by the same laws as the great one, and in the small proportions of a human being showing all those greater laws in operation, only reduced in time or sweep. This is the rule to which H. P. Blavatsky adheres, and which is found running through all the ancient mysteries and initiations.

It is said that our universe is a collection of atoms or molecules — called also "lives"; living together and through each the spirit struggles to reach consciousness, and that this struggle is governed by a law compelling it to go on in or between periods. In any period of such struggle some of these atoms or collections of molecules are left over, as it were, to renew the battle in the next period, and hence the state of the universe at any time of manifestation — or the state of each newly-manifested universe — must be the result of what was done in the preceding period.

Coming down to the man, we find that he is a collection of molecules or lives or cells, each striving with the other, and all affected for either good or bad results by the spiritual aspirations or want of them in the man who is the guide or god, so to say, of his little universe. When he is born, the molecules or cells or lives that are to compose his physical and astral forms are from that moment under his reign, and during the period of his smaller life they pass through a small manvantara just as the lives in the universe do, and when he dies he leaves them all impressed with the force and color of his thoughts and aspirations, ready to be used in composing the houses of other egos.

Now here is a great responsibility revealed to us of a double character. The first is for effects produced on and left in what we call matter in the molecules, when they come to be used by other egos, for they must act upon the latter for benefit or the reverse. The second is for the effect on the molecules themselves in this, that there are lives or entities in all — or rather they are all lives — who are either aided or retarded in their evolution by reason of the proper or improper use man made of this matter that was placed in his charge.

Without stopping to argue about what matter is, it will be sufficient to state that it is held to be co-eternal with what is called "spirit." That is, as it is put in the Bhagavad-Gita: "He who is spirit is also matter." Or, in other words, spirit is the opposite pole to matter of the Absolute. But of course this matter we speak of is not what we see about us, for the latter is only in fact phenomena of matter: even science holds that we do not really see matter.

Now during a manvantara or period of manifestation, the egos incarnating must use over and over again in any world upon which they are incarnating the matter that belongs to it. So, therefore, we are now using in our incarnations matter that has been used by ourselves and other egos over and over again, and are affected by the various tendencies impressed in it. And, similarly, we are leaving behind us for future races that which will help or embarrass them in their future lives.

This is a highly important matter, whether reincarnation be a true doctrine or not. For if each new nation is only a mass of new egos or souls, it must be much affected by the matter-environment left behind by nations and races that have disappeared forever. But for us who believe in reincarnation it has additional force, showing us one strong reason why universal brotherhood should be believed in and practised.

The other branch of the responsibility is just as serious. The doctrine that removes death from the universe and declares that all is composed of innumerable lives, constantly changing places with each other, contains in it of necessity the theory that man himself is full of these lives and that all are traveling up the long road of evolution. The secret doctrine holds that we are full of kingdoms of entities who depend upon us, so to say, for salvation. How enormous, then, is this responsibility, that we not only are to be judged for what we do with ourselves as a whole, but also for what we do for those unseen beings who are dependent upon us for light.

Sufi Mindfulness: Ibn Arabi - What the Seeker Needs 2

Extracts from a classic text: Book of the Quintessence Concerning What Is Indispensable For the Spiritual Seeker (transl. - Tosun Bayrak) Muhiyy ad-Din Ibn 'Arabi
1-Observe your mind constantly
What is essential for you is to be heedful at all times, to be attentive to what comes into your mind and your heart. Think about and analyze these thoughts and feelings. Try to control them. Beware of the wishes of your ego, settle your accounts with it.

2-Be constantly aware of the divine presence
Have conscience, shame, in front of Allah. That will be a motivation to make you heedful. You will then care about what you are doing or saying or thinking, and the thoughts and feelings that are ugly in the eyes of Allah will be unable to settle in your heart. Your heart will then be safe from wishing acts not in accordance with Allah's pleasure.
3-Be in the now, attentive and focused in all that you do
Give value to your time, live in the present moment. Do not live in imagination and throw your time away. Allah has prescribed a duty, an act, a worship for your every moment. Know what it is and hasten to do it. First perform the actions He has given to you as obligations. Then do what He has given to you to do through the example of His Prophet. Then take on what He has left you as voluntary, acceptable good deeds. Work to serve the ones who are in need.
4-Do all actions with devotion, as if each action was to be the last
Do everything you do in order to come close to your Lord in your worship and prayers. Think that each deed may be your last act, each prayer your last prostration, that you may not have another chance. If you do this, it will be another motivation for becoming heedful and also for becoming sincere and truthful. Allah does not accept good deeds done unconsciously and insincerely as readily as deeds done in consciousness and sincerity.

5-Cultivate cleanliness as a spiritual quality
Cleanliness is an order of Allah. Keep your body and your inner self clean at all times. […]

6-Cultivating high morals is essential
Above all, what you need is high morals, good character, proper behavior; you must identify your bad features and rid yourself of them. Your relationship to whomever you come into contact with must be based on the best of conduct - but what this means may vary with conditions and circumstances.
7-Adapt your behaviour so as to avoid harming others and doing the most good
Whoever neglects a single item of good behavior is considered to have bad character. Men are created different from each other. Their levels are different. Good behavior and character are also in different levels. Behavior is not a form. It is not to act in the same way on every occasion towards everyone. You have to consider each case, each person, in accordance with the circumstance and. the need of the person. A good rule to remember is that if a thing is done to bring salvation, truth, comfort, and peace to others, to oneself, and to as many people as possible, protecting them, eliminating pain and hardship, it is good behavior - on condition that it is not done for personal benefit, but for Allah's sake.[…]
8-Constantly strive to improve your behaviour
Proper behavior is the means by which an intention becomes a good deed. Therefore it is the greatest capital in the hand of the seeker. The proof is the word of the one who was brought with the most beautiful character, the last prophet, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who said, "I have been sent to perfect good behavior."
9-Be forgiving and unselfish
Allah says in the Holy Qur'an: And the recompense of evil is punishment like it, but whoever forgives and amends, his reward is with Allah[....] (Shura, 40) The religious law says that you may choose to demand your right or you may choose to leave it. Choose to leave that which is due to you and forgive, instead of punishing, so that you will be counted among the compassionate, the peaceful, the righteous, whose rewards are promised by Allah.
10-Avoid getting angry over personal wrongs
It is also within good behavior to be angry and to seek to punish when this is justified by the religious code. Anger and its manifestation are one of the great sins if aroused by wrongs done to you personally.
11-Be compassionate, gentle, and generous in all your interpersonal relations
Treat well those who are dependent upon you: the people who work for you, your children, your wives and husbands, your mothers, sisters, and friends, the animals in your care, the plants in your garden. Allah has given them into your hands to test you. […]Show love, compassion, delicacy, generosity, and protection towards those who depend on you - and in fact, to everyone. If you wish His compassion and protection, remember that you yourself depend on the One, the lord and owner of all and everything.
12-Be cautious with reckless and wild people
Do not seek to be close to the heedless, to the ones who are slaves to the desires of their flesh. They take hearts away from the light of truth and throw them into the dark hole of heedlessness, as they did with their own hearts. If you are placed with them in the same time and space, then face them and advise them. If they turn their backs on you, it is because they do not know their fronts from their backs. Do not stab them in the back. Be the same way to them whether they turn their faces to you or their backs. Then they may like and respect you and perchance they may be attached to you and follow you.
13-Constantly strive to progress spiritually
Do not be satisfied with your spiritual state; advance. Advance ceaselessly, without interruption. With firm intention pray to Allah, the Ultimate Truth, to bring you from the state in which you are to a state beyond it. In every state, in every move, while doing a thing or while being inactive, be sincere and truthful. Be with the Ultimate Truth. Do not ever forget Him. Feel His presence always.
Part 3
