Astrology: Mars square Pluto

This aspect is one the twelve more volatile aspects in astrology (comprised of oppositions and squares with any combination of Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Pluto), which I have observed. They are often accompanied, in their more extreme effects, with violence, accidents, surprises, natural disasters . It is somewhat easier to see the effects of these aspects as the more spectacular ones tend to get heavier media coverage.
 
With Mars being the fastest planet involved in these combinations (travels around the zodiac every two years), this means that there are volatile Mars aspects in effect for approximately three months every year. This underscores the importance of integrating the Mars energy in one's chart, which can include anger, aggressiveness and impulsiveness.

The list below is meant to give an example of the more volatile events that typically occur during these aspects. By following the news at these times, one can get the impression that the world is complete chaos. However, as noted, these aspects are only in effect roughly twenty-five percent of the year. They do however put a greater focus on what one could call the horror of living. 

One way to look at this stark reality of life is to consider that these aspects can have the role of pushing already tense or fragile situations to a breaking point, which has the useful effect of bursting the abscess to prevent further infection, as it were, or pointing out flaws in a structure that require greater attention for security, maintenance and repair. Moreover, if there were a greater awareness of astrology, many of these tragic incidents could be avoided. These can also be considered useful times to learn to integrate the Mars energies and these are also periods where one can learn to use the intense energy that is manifesting in productive ways.
 
The Summer quarter had two very volatile aspects, with Mars in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn  going exact on July 1st and Mars square Saturn, exact on August 7.
 
According to Café Astrology: Mars square Pluto: You are especially sensitive to anything that reminds you that you are not in control now. Your desires are intense and difficult to satisfy under this influence. A tendency to bully and confront may dominate. Efforts to make changes could be thwarted, or power struggles emerge. The trick is to remain flexible and to develop strategies. The desire to get the upper hand is strong, but it’s unlikely to happen under this influence. It would be wise to observe whatever powerful feelings that confrontations or conflicts arouse under this influence, as this transit has a way of pulling out suppressed matter, or emotional “slush”. Passions run high, and so does sexual energy.
 
Below is a list of 40 incidents that occurred from roughly June 23rd to July 7, when the aspect was in a relatively close orb.  They are not the result of a rigorous comparative statistical analysis proving definite causality from the aspect, but rather a random sample of events that seemed to me to have the Mars and Pluto characteristics of this aspect.
 
In my post for the Summer chart, I opined that the following aspect could indicate a strong characteristic for the quarter: Sun quincunx Pluto  'An event or person may trigger this tipping point by taking away your personal power. In relationships, you could react by trying to control and manipulate the other person which would result in conflict and bruised egos'.
 
The political events below could be considered examples of how this aspect played out.

Astrology: Fall Equinox, September 22, 2022

Transformative Crisis
 
The Summer chart was relatively simple, solid and strong, with a general creative, caring  atmosphere, but with some underlying longstanding conflicts, and tensions in a relationship rising to the surface. The fall equinox chart, which can be considered a snapshot of the whole quarter, is rather complex, with two intense T-Squares, but with a very beneficial Grand Trine formation.

 1-      Sun, Mercury, Venus conjunction
This formation brings sharp thinking, communicative, outspoken, tendencies, good problem-solving, adaptation and travel inclinations, with a sociable, cooperative, aspect, and a tendency for self-centeredness.
2-      Venus, Mercury, Pluto Grand Trine
This aspect in Earth signs, is empowering, focused, resolute, transformative, good for overcoming bad habits. It can bring deep insight, discoveries about relationships, or an ending of a relationship. Creative, idealistic, spontaneous, excentric feelings. Surprise can occur.
3 - Mars, Venus, Neptune T-Square
This pattern brings toxic positivity, dreaminess, tendencies to gloss things over, lack of discrimination in legal and financial matters. Emotional frustrations, coming on too strong, impatience with conventions, craving glamour and drama can figure into the equation.
4- Moon, Saturn, Uranus T-Square
A major factor for the fall occurs from September 23 to October 23, when Saturn and Uranus are within 1° of exact square. According to Café Astrology :
We have an unusual situation in which Saturn, the conservative planet, is in a progressive sign, Aquarius, while Uranus, the progressive planet, is in a conservative sign, Taurus. There can be tension experienced as our needs for freedom and spontaneity seem to clash with a need for structure and stability. Rules and limitations can feel more challenging to tolerate, but without some lines drawn, life feels too chaotic. Attempts to assert our individuality, freedom, and originality tend to undermine our feeling of groundedness and security. There may be sudden and unexpected twists that force us to do something different or free ourselves from old habits. Ideally, we can find creative ways to satisfy these diverging needs, perhaps by giving form to our ideals and quest for progress. Adjusting our plans may be in order, and striking a balance between convention and innovation is the challenge. While this aspect is active, however, we can feel some real frustration (Café Astrology).
The moon aspects give an added emotional intensity to the situation. Fairly tight Mars sextile Saturn brings determined effort and actions, with a sense of responsibility and purposefulness. Probably more favorable for the conservative side, than the progressive.
5- Moon, Pluto, Neptune Yod
This Yod is very precisely located to link all of the aspects together, and so could perhaps serve as an interesting summary of the whole chart and the quarter. Occurring with the longstanding Neptune-Pluto sextile could mean an exceptionally widespread, global impact.
Characterized by subconscious fears emotional outburst, mood swings, strange behavior, crisis, or relationship drama. Conflicting emotions can lead to confusion, increasing tension, critical point or meltdown.  Paranoia and suspicion can lead to mistrust of a loved one, scandal, betrayal, loss or disappointment. Problems with drugs and alcohol addiction, infectious disease, misdiagnosis or poisoning. Family secrets may emerge. Tendencies for political activism, and extreme beliefs or ideologies. There is a desire to better understand occult and esoteric subjects..
According to Café Astrology: ‘The key to reducing tension and avoiding a crisis point is to find the right balance in your life. A balance between a social drink and alcoholism, a balance between health consciousness and hypochondria, the right balance between service and sacrifice. The key to finding the right balance is trust and faith, in yourself, in others and in the universe/God.'
Summary
An intense, high energy chart. There can be tension experienced as our needs for freedom and spontaneity seem to clash with a need for structure and stability.  There may be an overly optimistic tendency to avoid problems, warning signs, along with some impatience. Unconscious fears, obsessive tendencies, paranoid suspicions can reach a crisis point of outbursts and meltdowns. On the positive side, there is a sharp, smart, communicative, sociable energy. There is also a strong potential for empowerment, resolve, insightful discoveries, and deep transformation.

Some very favorable planetary aspects are lining up in the next couple of years, but Pluto in Capricorn (driving ambition for political power) remains a key source of tension, and it’s entry into Aquarius will only occur very gradually over the next two years:

June 12th 2023 – Pluto re-enters Capricorn.
January 22nd 2024 – Pluto enters Aquarius
September 3rd 2024 – Pluto re-enters Capricorn.
November 20th 2024 – Pluto enters Aquarius.

Blavatsky on Human Embryology

Any anatomist who has made the development and growth of the embryo and foetus "a subject of special study," can tell, without much brain-work, what daily experience and the evidence of his own eyes show him, viz.: that up to a certain period, the human embryo is a fac-simile of a young batrachian in its first remove from the spawn — a tadpole. But no physiologist or anatomist seems to have had the idea of applying to the development of the human being — from the first instant of its physical appearance as a germ to its ultimate formation and birth — the Pythagorean esoteric doctrine of metempsychosis, so erroneously interpreted by critics. The meaning of the kabalistic axiom: "A stone becomes a plant; a plant a beast; a beast a man, etc.," was mentioned in another place in relation to the spiritual and physical evolution of man on this earth. We will now add a few words more to make the idea clearer. (1)

What is the primitive shape of the future man? A grain, a corpuscle, say some physiologists; a molecule, an ovum of the ovum, say others. If it could be analyzed — by the spectroscope or otherwise — of what ought we to expect to find it composed? Analogically, we should say, of a nucleus of inorganic matter, deposited from the circulation at the germinating point, and united with a deposit of organic matter. In other words, this infinitesimal nucleus of the future man is composed of the same elements as a stone — of the same elements as the earth, which the man is destined to inhabit. Moses is cited by the kabalists as authority for the remark, that it required earth and water to make a living being, and thus it may be said that man first appears as a stone.

At the end of three or four weeks the ovum has assumed a plant-like appearance, one extremity having become spheroidal and the other tapering, like a carrot. Upon dissection it is found to be composed, like an onion, of very delicate laminae or coats, enclosing a liquid. The laminae approach each other at the lower end, and the embryo hangs from the root of the umbilicus almost like a fruit from the bough. The stone has now become changed, by metempsychosis, into a plant. Then the embryonic creature begins to shoot out, from the inside outward, its limbs, and develops its features. The eyes are visible as two black dots; the ears, nose, and mouth form depressions, like the points of a pineapple, before they begin to project. The embryo develops into an animal-like foetus — the shape of a tadpole — and like an amphibious reptile lives in water, and develops from it. Its monad has not yet become either human or immortal, for the kabalists tell us that that only comes at the "fourth hour." One by one the foetus assumes the characteristics of the human being, the first flutter of the immortal breath passes through his being; he moves; nature opens the way for him; ushers him into the world; and the divine essence settles in the infant frame, which it will inhabit until the moment of physical death, when man becomes a spirit.

This mysterious process of a nine-months formation the kabalists call the completion of the "individual cycle of evolution." As the foetus develops from the liquor amnii in the womb, so the earths germinate from the universal ether, or astral fluid, in the womb of the universe. These cosmic children, like their pigmy inhabitants, are first nuclei; then ovules; then gradually mature; and becoming mothers in their turn, develop mineral, vegetable, animal, and human forms. From centre to circumference, from the imperceptible vesicle to the uttermost conceivable bounds of the cosmos, these glorious thinkers, the kabalists, trace cycle merging into cycle, containing and contained in an endless series. The embryo evolving in its pre-natal sphere, the individual in his family, the family in the state, the state in mankind, the earth in our system,that system in its central universe, the universe in the cosmos, and the cosmos in the First Cause: — the Boundless and Endless. So runs their philosophy of evolution:
"All are but parts of one stupendous whole,
Whose body Nature is; and God the Soul."
"Worlds without number

To apply the above propositions to the case in point: There are several well-recognized principles of science, as, for instance, that a pregnant woman is physically and mentally in a highly impressible state. Physiology tells us that her intellectual faculties are weakened, and that she is affected to an unusual degree by the most trifling events. Her pores are opened, and she exudes a peculiar cutaneous perspiration; she seems to be in a receptive condition for all the influences in nature. Reichenbach's disciples assert that her odic condition is very intense. Du Potet warns against incautiously mesmerizing her, for fear of affecting the offspring. Her diseases are imparted to it, and often it absorbs them entirely to itself; her pains and pleasures react upon its temperament as well as its health; great men proverbially have great mothers, and vice versa. "It is true that her imagination has an influence upon the foetus," admits Magendie, thus contradicting what he asserts in another place; and he adds that "sudden terror may cause the death of the foetus, or retard its growth." (Isis Unveiled 1,  394)

The Third Round types contributed to the formation of the types in this one. On strict analogy, the cycle of Seven Rounds in their work of the gradual formation of man through every kingdom of Nature, are repeated on a microscopical scale in the first seven months of gestation of a future human being. Let the student think over and work out this analogy. As the seven months' old unborn baby, though quite ready, yet needs two months more in which to acquire strength and consolidate; so man, having perfected his evolution during seven Rounds, remains two periods more in the womb of mother-Nature before he is born, or rather reborn a Dhyani, still more perfect than he was before he launched forth as a Monad on the newly built chain of worlds. Let the student ponder over this mystery, and then he will easily convince himself that, as there are also physical links between many classes, so there are precise domains wherein the astral merges into physical evolution. (The Secret Doctrine 2, 257)

That man originates like other animals in a cell and develops "through stages undistinguishable from those of fish, reptile, and mammal until the cell attains the highly specialized development of the quadrumanous and at last the human type," is an Occult axiom thousands of years old. The Kabalistic axiom: "A stone becomes a plant; a plant a beast; a beast a man; a man a God," holds good throughout the ages. Haeckel, in his Shopfungsgeschichte, shows a double drawing representing two embryos -- that of a dog six weeks old, and that of a man, eight weeks. The two, except the slight difference in the head, larger and wider about the brain in the man, are undistinguishable. "In fact, we may say that every human being passes through the stage of fish and reptile before arriving at that of mammal and finally of man. If we take him up at the more advanced stage where the embryo has already passed the reptilian form . . . for a considerable time, the line of development remains the same as that of other mammalia. The rudimentary limbs are exactly similar, the five fingers and toes develop in the same way, and the resemblance after the first four weeks' growth between the embryo of a man and a dog is such that it is scarcely possible to distinguish them. Even at the age of eight weeks the embryo man is an animal with a tail hardly to be distinguished from an embryo puppy" ("Modern Science," etc., p. 171).

Why, then, not make man and dog evolve from a common ancestor, or from a reptile -- a Naga, instead of coupling man with the quadrumana? This would be just as logical as the other, and more so. The shape and the stages of the human embryo have not changed since historical times, and these metamorphoses were known to AEsculapius and Hippocrates as well as to Mr. Huxley. Therefore, since the Kabalists had remarked it since prehistoric times, it is no new discovery. In "Isis," Vol. I., 389, it is noticed and half explained. 
 
As the embryo of man has no more of the ape in it than of any other mammal, but contains in itself the totality of the kingdoms of nature, and since it seems to be "a persistent type" of life, far more so than even the Foraminifera, it seems as illogical to make him evolve from the ape as it would be to trace his origin to the frog or the dog. Both Occult and Eastern philosophies believe in evolution, which Manu and Kapila* give with far more clearness than any scientist does at present. No need to repeat that which was fully debated in Isis Unveiled, as the reader may find all these arguments and the description of the basis on which all the Eastern doctrines of Evolution rested, in our earlier books.** But no Occultist can accept the unreasonable proposition that all the now existing forms, "from the structureless Amoeba to man," are the direct lineal descendants of organisms which lived millions and millions of years before the birth of man, in the pre-Silurian epochs, in the sea or land-mud. The Occultists believe in an inherent law of progressive development.* Mr. Darwin never did, and says so himself. (SD 2, 258-59)

1- The evolutive process of incarnation (Exoterically); esoterically : principles of Kriya-Yoga, yogic means of creating and controlling life forms (1-6)

The Supernatural Powers (siddhayaḥ) come with 1- birth (janma), 2- or by means of herbs (auṣadhi), 3- or mantras, austerities (tapas) 4- or perfect contemplation (samādhi)

The transformation (pariṇāmaḥ) into other species (jāti) is accomplished through the filling in of their essential nature (prakṛti). Cause (nimittam) does not set the essential natures (prakṛtīnām) into motion (aprayojakam) but it breaks down the barrier (varaṇa). The created (nirmāṇa) minds (cittāni) are produced from the pure (mātrāt) I-sense (asmitā). Of these created minds, those brought about through meditation (dhyāna) are without any latent impressions (āśayam).

2- The practical nature of Karma, factors underlying mechanisms of re-birth (7-11)

The action (karma) of a Yogī is neither white (aśukla) nor black (akṛṣṇam), while those of others are of three kinds., hence four kinds in all: 1- black: wicked; 2-black-white mixed: causing pain to, or acting kindly towards others; 3-white: those who resort to the means of improvement of study and meditation; 4- nor white Nor black: the Sannyasis, afflictions have been destroyed, present body is the last one.

From the three kinds of action there is manifestation (abhivyaktiḥ) of Vāsanās suitable (anuguṇānām) to their consequences (vipāka).

Vāsanās:  latent impressions of "feelings" produced by birth, life-span and experience of pleasure and pain. (aroma) are residual potencies, the vehicles.

Karmāśaya:  latent impressions, arises out of "actions" or karma and not out of feelings like the former.

Saṁskāra: commonly used to designate "latent impressions" in general.

Because of similarity (ekarūpatvāt) between memory (smṛti) and latent impressions (saṁskārayoḥ), there is immediate (ānantaryam) emergence of Vāsanās even though separated (vyavahitānām) by birth (jāti), space or position (deśa) and time (kāla). Seeing that the desire for self-welfare (āśiṣaḥ) is eternal (nityatvāt), those Vāsanās from which it emerges are also beginningless (anāditvam). Since (Vāsanā) is held together (saṅgṛhītatvāt) by : 1- cause (hetu), 2- fruit or result (phala), 3-refuge (āśraya) and 4- support, or the supporting object which attracts Vāsanā (ālambanaiḥ), in the absence (abhāve) of them, there is also absence (abhāvaḥ) of that Vāsanā.

The cause :-By virtue comes pleasure, by vice pain. From pleasure comes attachment ; from pain aversion. Thence comes effort. Thereby, acting by mind, body and speech, one either favours or injures others. hence come again virtue and vice, pleasure and pain, attachment and aversion. Thus it is that revolves the six-spoken wheel of the world. And the driver of this wheel is Nescience, the root of the afflictions. This is the Cause.

3- Temporal aspect of the nature of manifested reality (12-14)

Past (atīta) and future (anāgatam) exist (asti) in their essential forms (sva-rūpataḥ). The difference is only in the characteristics of the forms (dharmāṇām) at different (bhedāt) times or phases --i.e. past, present and future (adhva). The future is the manifestation which is to be. The past is the appearance which has been experienced. The present is that which is in active operation. It is this three-fold substance which is the object of knowledge.

Those characteristics are a- manifest (vyakta) and b- subtle (sūkṣmāḥ) and consist (ātmānaḥ) of the three Guṇas (qualities of Prakṛti) due to the coordinated or coincidental ekatvāt mutation of the three Guṇas (pariṇāma), an object (vastu) appears to be something real (tattvam).

Sequence (kramaḥ) is correlated (pratiyogī) to the moments (kṣaṇa) and is perceivable or noticeable (nirgrāhyaḥ) on the termination (aparānta) of the mutations (pariṇāma). Further, succesion is found in the permanent also. This permanence is two-fold, the Eternal in Perfection; and the Etemal in Evolution. Of these, the perfect eternity belongs to the Purusa. The evolutionary eternity belongs to the qualities. The Permanent or Eternal is that in which the substance is not destroyed by changing appearances. Both are permanent because their substance is never destroyed.

4- Objective nature of existence, subjective nature of perception (15-18)

Despite sameness (sāmye) of objects (vastu), there is a different (vibhaktaḥ) way or path (panthāḥ) to them both --i.e. object and its inherent knowledge (tayoḥ) since there are different (bhedāt) minds (citta). The object (vastu) is not dependent (tantram) on only one mind (citta), because if so, what would happen when the object is not experienced or cognized (apramāṇakam) by that mind?

5- The mind and cognition (19-24)

The object (vastu) is known (jñāta) or unknown (ajñātam) to the mind (cittasya) according to how (apekṣitvāt) it colors (uparāga) that very mind. To the Lord -i.e. Puruṣa- (prabhoḥ) of that mind,the mental (citta) modifications (vṛttayaḥ) are always (sadā) known (jñātāḥ) because of the immutability (apariṇāmitvāt) of that very Puruṣa. That (mind) is not  self-illuminating (sva-ābhāsam) since it is a knowable object (dṛśyatvāt). And there is no cognizance (anavadhāraṇam) of them both --i.e. mind and knowable objects-- (ubhaya) simultaneously (ekasamaye).

When Consciousness (citi), the essence of being (puruṣa) changes into the form (ākāra) Buddhi (intelligence), awareness (saṁvedanam) arises from one’s own intellectuality (sva-buddhi). Mind (cittam), being affected (uparaktam) by both the seer (draṣṭṛ) and the seen (dṛśya), is all-comprehensive (sarva-artham). Thus those who teach that the knower, the knowable and the means of knowledge are the three modifications of the mind, and thus divide the phenomena into three classes are the only true philosophers. It is to them that the Purusa is known.

6- The recognition of the distinction between the Purusa and the Sattva (25-28)

To one who knows (darśinaḥ) the special distinction (viśeṣa) --i.e. to one who has realized Puruṣa or the Self--, there is cessation (vinivṛttiḥ) of the practice of pondering (bhāvanā) over the nature (bhāva) of his own Self (ātma). Then, the mind (cittam) inclines (nimnam) toward discriminative knowledge (viveka) and is directed (prāk-bhāram) toward complete Liberation (kaivalya).

There can still occur breaks (chidreṣu) of that discriminative knowledge, where other (antarāṇi) mental modifications (pratyaya) emerge because of residual latencies (saṁskārebhyaḥ). The removal (hānam) of these mental modifications (pratyaya) is as that of the Afflictions (kleśa).

7- The Cloud of virtue (Dharmamegha) and Complete Liberation (kaivalyam) (29-34)

One who, having attained discriminative (viveka) knowledge (khyāteḥ) in the highest degree and at all times (sarvathā), does not take an interest (akusīdasya) even in that omniscience resulting from "Vivekajaṁ jñānam" or "Knowledge arising from discernment" (See 3,54, prasaṅkhyāne), experiences a type of Perfect Contemplation (samādhiḥ) known as Cloud of Virtue (dharma-meghaḥ). By the attainment thereof, the affliction of Ignorance, etc.,  are removed, even to the very root. And the good and bad vehicles of action are uprooted. On the afflictions and the actions being removed, the wise man becomes free even while alive (the Jivanmukta). From Dharmamegha, there is cessation (nivṛttiḥ) of Afflictions (kleśa) and actions (karma).

Then, due to the infinity (ānantyāt) of knowledge (jñānasya) free (apetasya) from all veiling (āvaraṇa) impurities (mala), the knowables (jñeyam) appear to be few (alpam). From that Dharmamegha or Cloud of Virtue, when the Guṇas have accomplished their purpose (kṛta-arthānām), there is cessation (samāptiḥ) of the mutative (pariṇāma) sequence (krama) of those very Guṇas. Complete Liberation (kaivalyam) or the Power (śaktiḥ) of Consciousness (citi) established (pratiṣṭhā) in her own nature (sva-rūpa) occurs when the Guṇas return to their original source --i.e. Prakṛti, as they have no further purpose to fulfill (artha-śūnyānām) for Puruṣa.
