Theosophy Basics: The Astral Light, Astral Plane, Astral Body, Akasha

Chapter 21
, of William Q. Judge, Echoes from the Orient : A Broad Outline of Theosophical Doctrines. Published as a booklet in 1890, it is a collection of 21 articles appearing in a new independent weekly newspaper, Kate Field's (1838-1896) Washington, which ran from 1890-95. The pieces have a casual, anecdotal flavour and have to stand as one of the most esoteric presentations of Theosophy in a mainstream platform. Very good concise overview of the Theosophical views on the astral plane or in a general way, the akasha, in Sanskrit.

1- Esoteric symbolism of the snake

High in the esteem of the Hindu stands the serpent, both as a symbol and a creature. Moving in a wavy line, he figures the vast revolution of the Sun through eternal space carrying the rapidly whirling Earth in her lesser orbit; periodically casting his skin, he presents a visible illustration of renewal of life or reincarnation; coiling to strike, he shows the working of the law of Karma-Nemesis which, with a basis in our actions, deals an unerring blow. As a symbol with tail in mouth, forming a circle, he represents eternity, the circle of necessity, all-devouring Time. For the older Initiates he spoke to them also of the astral light which is at once devilish and divine.

2- The Astral Light, agent of psychic powers

Probably in the whole field of Theosophic study there is nothing so interesting as the astral light. Among the Hindus it is known as Akasa, which can also be translated as æther. Through a knowledge of its properties they say that all the wonderful phenomena of the Oriental Yogis are accomplished. It is also claimed that clairvoyance, clairaudience, mediumship, and seership as known to the Western world are possible only through its means. It is the register of our deeds and thoughts, the great picture gallery of the earth, where the seer can always gaze upon any event that has ever happened, as well as those to come.

3- Astral beings, elementals

Swimming in it as in a sea are beings of various orders and also the astral remains of deceased men and women. The Rosicrucians and other European mystics called these beings Sylphs, Salamanders, Gnomes, Undines, Elementals; the Hindu calls them Gandharvas or celestial musicians, Yakshas, Rakshasas and many more. The "spooks" of the dead — mistaken by Spiritualists for the individuals who are no more — float in this Akasic substance, and for centuries have been known to the mystical Hindu as Bhuta, another name for devil, or Pisacha, a most horrible devil — neither of them any more than the cast-off soul-body nearest earth, devoid of conscience and only powerful for evil.

4- Porphyry, Paracelsus

But the term "astral light," while not new, is purely of Occidental origin. Porphyry spoke of it when referring to the celestial or soul-body, which he says is immortal, luminous, and "star-like"; Paracelsus called it the "sidereal light"; later it grew to be known as astral. It was said to be the same as the anima mundi or soul of the world. Modern scientific investigators approach it when they speak of "luminiferous ether" and "radiant matter." The great astronomer, Camille Flammarion, who was a member of the Theosophical Society during his life, speaks of the astral light in his novel Uranie and says: "The light emanating from all these suns that people immensity, the light reflected through space by all these worlds lighted by these suns, photographs throughout the boundless heaven the centuries, the days, the moments as they pass.... From this it results that the histories of all the worlds are travelling through space without dispersing altogether, and that all the events of the past are present and live evermore in the bosom of the infinite."

5- Not really light - a medium for many psychic phenomena and action

Like all unfamiliar or occult things the astral light is difficult to define, and especially so from the very fact that it is called "light." It is not the light as we know it, and neither is it darkness. Perhaps it was said to be a light because when clairvoyants saw by means of it, the distant objects seemed to be illuminated. But as equally well distant sounds can be heard in it, heavy bodies levitated by it, odors carried thousands of miles through it, thoughts read in it, and all the various phenomena by mediums brought about under its action, there has been a use of the term "light" which while unavoidable is none the less erroneous.

6- An all-permeating substance

A definition to be accurate must include all the functions and powers of this light, but as those are not fully known even to the mystic, and wholly terra incognita for the scientist, we must be content with a partial analysis. It is a substance easily imagined as imponderable ether which, emanating from the stars, envelopes the earth and permeates every atom of the globe and each molecule upon it. Obeying the laws of attraction and repulsion, it vibrates to and fro, making itself now positive and now negative. This gives it a circular motion which is symbolized by the serpent. It is the great final agent, or prime mover, cosmically speaking, which not only makes the plant grow but also keeps up the diastole and systole of the human heart.

7- Astral Light records everything

Very like the action of the sensitive photographic plate is this light. It takes, as Flammarion says, the pictures of every moment and holds them in its grasp. For this reason the Egyptians knew it as the Recorder; it is the Recording Angel of the Christian, and in one aspect it is Yama, the judge of the dead in the Hindu pantheon, for it is by the pictures we impress therein that we are judged by Karma.

8- Influences humanity's vices

As an enormous screen or reflector the astral light hangs over the earth and becomes a powerful universal hypnotizer of human beings. The pictures of all acts good and bad done by our ancestors as by ourselves, being ever present to our inner selves, we constantly are impressed by them by way of suggestion and go then and do likewise. Upon this the great French priest-mystic, Eliphas Levi, says: "we are often astonished when in society at being assailed by evil thoughts and suggestions that we would not have imagined possible, and we are not aware that we owe them solely to the presence of some morbid neighbor; this fact is of great importance, since it relates to the manifestation of conscience — one of the most terrible and incontestable secrets of the magic art.... So diseased souls have a bad breath, and vitiate the moral atmosphere; that is to say, they mingle impure reflections with the astral light which penetrates them, and thus establish deleterious currents." (Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie. )

9- Preserves fruits of great achievements

There is also a useful function of this light. As it preserves the pictures of all past events and things, and as there is nothing new under the sun, the appliances, the ideas, the philosophy, the arts and sciences of long buried civilizations are continually being projected in pictures out of the astral into the brains of living men. This gives a meaning not only to the oft-recurring "coincidence" of two or more inventors or scientists hitting upon the same ideas or inventions at about the same time and independently of each other, but also to other events and curious happenings.

10- The medium for psychic phenomena and powers

Some self-styled scientists have spoken learnedly of telepathy, and other phenomena, but give no sufficient reason in nature for thought-transference or apparitions or clairvoyance or the hundred and one varieties of occurrences of an occult character noticed from day to day among all conditions of men. It is well to admit that thought may be transferred without speech directly from one brain to another, but how can the transference be effected without a medium? That medium is the astral light. The moment the thought takes shape in the brain it is pictured in this light, and from there is taken out again by any other brain sensitive enough to receive it intact.

11- Astral remains cause of ghosts and apparitions

Knowing the strange properties of the astral plane and the actual fate of the sheaths of the soul spoken of in another article, the Theosophical Adepts of all times gave no credit to pretended returning of the dead. Eliphas Levi learned this well and said: "The astral light combining with ethereal fluids forms the astral phantom of which Paracelsus speaks. This astral body being freed at death, attracts to itself and preserves for a long time, by the sympathy of likeness, the reflection of the past life; if a powerfully sympathetic will draws it into the proper current it manifests itself in the form of an apparition." But with a sensitive, abnormally constituted person present — a medium, in other words, and all of that class are nervously unbalanced — the strong will is not needed, for the astral light and the living medium's astral body recall these soulless phantoms, and out of the same reservoir take their speech, their tones, their idiosyncrasies of character, which the deluded devotees of this debasing practice are cheated into imagining as the returned self of dead friend or relative.

12-Can assume extreme density

Yet all I have referred to here are only instances of a few of the various properties of the astral light. So far as concerns our world it may be said that astral light is everywhere, interpenetrating all things; to have a photographic power by which it grasps pictures of thoughts, deeds, events, tones, sounds, colors, and all things; reflective in the sense that it reflects itself into the minds of men; repellent from its positive side and attractive from the negative; capable of assuming extreme density when drawn in around the body by powerful will or by abnormal bodily states, so that no physical force can penetrate it.

This phase of its action explains some facts officially recorded during the witchcraft excitement in Salem. It was there found that although stones and other flying objects came toward the possessed one they always fell as it were from the force of gravity just at the person's feet. The Hindu Yogi gives evidence of a use of this condensation of the astral light when he allows arrows and other projectiles to be thrown at him, all of them falling at his feet no matter how great their momentum, and the records of genuine Spiritualistic phenomena in the United States furnish similar experiences.

13- Possesses powerful hypnotic properties, clairvoyance, clairaudience

The astral light is a powerful factor, unrecognized by science, in the phenomenon of hypnotism. Its action will explain many of the problems raised by Binet, Charcot and others, and especially that class in which two or more distinct personalities seem to be assumed by the subject, who can remember in each only those things and peculiarities of expression which belong to that particular stratum of their experience. These strange things are due to the currents in the astral light. In each current will be found a definite series of reflections, and they are taken up by the inner man, who reports them through speech and action on this plane as if they were his own. By the use of these currents too, but unconsciously, the clairvoyants and clairaudients seem to read in the hidden pages of life.

14- Potentially both our destroyer and our uplifter

This light can therefore be impressed with evil or good pictures, and these are reflected into the subconscious mind of every human being. If you fill the astral light with bad pictures, just such as the present century is adept at creating, it will be our devil and destroyer, but if by the example of even a few good men and women a new and purer sort of events are limned upon this eternal canvas, it will become our Divine Uplifter.

Astrology: Winter Solstice, December 21, 2024- Part 2 - Chart

2025 is ending with a culmination of obstacles with  Mars square Neptune (Dec. 14), Sun square Saturn Dec. 16) and Sun square Neptune (Dec. 20) in a turbulent transition year, before shifting into a period of very positive, optimistic energies, which will begin to take a more stable, focused outlook next May, when Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto complete their entrance into new signs.

Summary
1- Sun conjunct Mars in Capricorn; Sun conjunct Venus in Sagittarius; Venus conjunct Mars
The Sun, Mars, Venus conjunction brings an active, dynamic, and assertive energy. It bring a passionately expressive, sociable and cooperative mood, as well as a sense of grace, charm and diplomacy. It can bring a positive energy to relationships with an idealistic outlook, bringing inclinations for intellectual rapport and shared values.

2-Sun, Mars, Venus Conjunction square Saturn/Neptune in Pisces

The positive Sun, Mars, Venus conjunction is in conflict with the stark Saturn-Neptune conjunction. This can bring obstacles, blockages, delays, and frustrations, due mainly to unrealistic goals and desires. There can be confusion, with difficulty in choosing a direction, understanding people’s motives. There can be difficulty with relating to people, and fluctuations in relationship and energy.

Dynamic, active, tendencies for positive, friendly relationships are faced with destabilizing circumstances that can bring a stark realization of confused, deluded, and deceptive situations.

3- Moon in Capricorn  opposition Jupiter; Jupiter in Cancer opposition Pluto in Aquarius

These two Jupiter oppositions can bring exaggerated promises making people unreliable and irresponsible. Career versus home priorities, family questions versus social progress are issues that come into prominence. There is a tendency to bite off more than we can chew, to push too hard, and to force ideas upon others.

4- Pluto, Neptune-Saturn Uranus tight Minor Grand
A period of potential revolution, innovation and reform in socio-political structures focused on the environment and finance. Deep psychological insight facilitating social progress, idealistic values and spiritual awakening are favoured.

5- Jupiter/Uranus/Neptune-Saturn minor grand trine

Jupiter joins the Uranus, Neptune, Pluto minor grand trine and brings an added positive, optimistic outlook. Humanitarian ideals, spiritual seeking, altruistic and compassionate feelings, as well as meeting different people are favoured. Openness to new ideas, innovations, originality, alternative lifestyles focused on environmental and housing technologies, land and housing rights, and creative pursuits can emerge. A sense of practical, constructive accomplishment is also facilitated.

Analysis

When Uranus re-enters Gemini on April 25, 2026 we will have entered into an exceptional year of positive aspects in a more stable fashion as the planets establish themselves in the new signs of Aries, Aquarius, and Gemini, as we enter the most optimistic quarter of the 20-year Jupiter-Saturn cycle. Like previous charts, this one is strongly linked to the Uranus, Neptune, Pluto minor grand trine (magic triangle), but not as intensely as in the previous chart. With Jupiter in trine to the magic triangle, all five outer planets are working in harmony. When Neptune and Saturn re-enter Aries on January 26 and February 13, there could be some turbulence as a final period of revisiting past cycles closes. The end of February looks to be quite intense with a  Solar eclipse (Feb 17), Saturn conjunct Neptune (Feb 20), Mercury Retrograde (Feb 25), Mars square Uranus (Feb 27) and a Lunar eclipse (March 3). Should I rectify my previous statement about the Israel-Hamas war and predict an end before April 25? Presumably, it could, but with the difficult end of February period, it's possible that the peace process can get stalled this Winter. Moreover, the Russian-Ukraine war could see improvements in that peace process (Admittedly, I haven't looked at any specific charts for those situations. I'm just basing my views on the general astrological outlook).

Prognostic

The burgeoning energy of humanitarian, idealistic, innovative, original spiritual and social reform should continue to be felt more and more, but the Winter semester could still be similar to most of 2025, with some turmoil and upheavals due to the major astrological changes. Indeed, there could be added motivation for bold, progressive, concrete reforming and innovating with a broad sense of optimism and openness emerging. At an individual level, we have a dynamic, outgoing, efficient outlook that is valuing friendly social relations and cooperation based on common values and objectives.

However, there could be tensions felt due to an exaggerated optimism and confidence, as well as a general resistance to energies of change. Hence these two conflicting poles (individual social assertiveness and idealistic progress) can cause obstacles, blockages, confusion, and misunderstandings. There can be frustrations, disillusionment and disappointments, which could tend to prompt pause for a reality check, in order to better adjust the enthusiasm more in accord with practical possibilities and long term goals. This situation can result at worst in volatile breakdowns.

Astrology: Winter Solstice, December 21, 2025 Part 1 - Review

For the Fall prognostic, we wrote:

This semester seems characterized by strong impetus for progressive change with inspiration for positive, fair, respectful social relations. Qualities of a strong mind/body/emotion balance geared towards warm, pleasant fair relationships are favored. Further qualities of deep insight, articulate communication, strong decisiveness, focus, endurance, and leadership allowing a practical sense of efficiency are stimulated. A sense of bold creativity, originality can also inspire a sense of initiative.

At the same time there is stark tendency for resisting change through escapism, depression or aggression which can bring insecurity, confusion, self-doubt, and guilt. It can be depressing, but it can be a call to face challenges realistically. Projects can be faced with obstacles, blockages and delays.  This can bring tendencies for escapism, getting lost in dreamy fantasies and distractions. Moreover, tendencies for conflicts, competition, intimidation and power struggles, with propensities to exaggerate and over-estimate, can get quite intense and even reach volatile proportions.

Although many positive tools are potentialized to counteract the debilitating and impulsive energies of the chart, a key strategy could be tapping into the motivational inspiration of our altruistic values and beliefs to overcome the demoralizing tendencies that block productive action.

Following the September 21 solar eclipse, we had

Oct 14 Gaza peace plan announced. In the Fall prognostic, I boldly declared:

Although there have been some strong efforts, I do not see the chance of the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars showing any signs of ending before next Spring at the earliest.

Perhaps I was off the mark, but the peace process, although making headway, is taking time to unfold, therefore, my prognostic for a Spring finalization might still be plausible. In any case, conditions for peace should be more favourable in the Spring, as the outer planets take a more definite positioning in the new signs.

Tsongkapa's Twenty-Seven Verses On Mind Training

Twenty-Seven Verses On Mind Training

Je Tsongkapa (1357-1419)

from Mother of the Buddhas: Meditations on the Prajnaparamita Sutra

By Lex Hixon, 1993

Also known as Mind Training in Ornamental Words, it is Tsonkhapa's contribution to the Lojong or Kadam tradition. Following the foundations set by Atisa, Se Chilbu, Chekawa, and many more, he composed an eloquent poem to inspire compassion and altruism in thought, feeling and action.

1 ) With body, speech, and mind fully aligned, I prostrate fervently before those rare beings, who are victorious over all notions of limitation, and before their spiritual daughters and sons. May a cosmic celebration of pure poetry, perfectly expressing the most subtle teaching of these victorious sages and the inheritors of their wisdom, now burst forth like an infinite garden in perpetual spring.

2 ) Gaze calmly with the clear eye of Prajnaparamita (Perfect Wisdom) upon universal manifestation, this beginningless tapestry woven from vibrant karmic threads of conscious beings, and listen to the harmonious symphony of interdependence. Purify entirely from the slightest shadow of negativity this boundless expanse of apparent struggle and conflict. With diamond-clear intention, instill faith everywhere. With mirrorlike wisdom, stabilize all chaotic minds.

3 ) If shadows of negativity are not dispelled immediately, these strange insubstantial absences of light gain immense potency with every new action, until even those who understand the dangers of negation will not have enough power to choose the way of Clear Light. Even those who study philosophy and speak eloquently are unable to release themselves from illusory darkness.

4 ) The full spectrum of struggling and aspiring humanity, from immature persons to advanced contemplatives, suffers the painful delusion of clinging to these empty shadows as they become filled with affective power by self-centered action and intention.

5 ) This apparent bondage, this clinging to shadows, is constituted by reactions of pleasure and pain, obviously or subtly rooted in self-serving motivation. By those rare beings who have gone beyond, who throughout all time abide in bliss as Buddhas, the true nature of reactions and their results is clearly known to be insubstantial. But the boundless expanse of self-oriented beings, who bind themselves inexorably to selfish motivation, therefore cannot liberate or even distance themselves slightly from egocentricity.

6 ) We should meditate carefully and thoroughly upon the inevitably binding nature of negativity, learning to discriminate sensitively and unerringly between the actions which negate the preciousness of others and actions which affirm and judiciously care for others. From this clear viewpoint, renounce all negation and strive with the total commitment of your being to become entirely affirmative of all life everywhere.

7 ) The seeds of action are positive and negative intentions. Any intention consciously rooted in selfless motivation, desiring only sheer goodness for all conscious life, will establish the stable ground of goodness and will universally generate rich results of goodness. Any intention even slightly weakened by selfish motivation undermines both the ground of our life and its fruits. Intention is the sole creative force of existence.

8 ) To cling to the intention of triumphing over another, the desire to prosper at the expense of any being or to indulge in the slightest bias against any being because of personal feelings of attraction or repulsion, these alone are the causes for whatever suffering exists in personal lives and in the universe as a whole. We should meditate ceaselessly on this revolutionary truth, remaining conscious of it during every moment of existence.

9 ) Those who attempt to deceive with words of advice that in any way exalt selfishness and depreciate selflessness become hopelessly lost in narrow-mindedness, obsessed with their own selfish interests. Such persons create the only error in the universe: diverting our precious care and concern for others to ourselves. This deception not only expresses hatred for Buddha’s wisdom but is the absurd attempt to destroy universal Buddha nature.

10 ) To avoid decisively this disastrous way of hatred, bring to birth within your stream of awareness the maternal mind of totally positive intentions toward all beings as toward cherished children. This mind of kindness, supremely skillful in loving care, unveils the infinite value of every single life, demonstrating compassion as the meaning of existence. But the clumsy negative mind, operating blindly without concern for the preciousness of others, drains the nectar of meaning from human life. Cultivate diligently the selfless love that transforms every thought and action into tangible help for conscious beings.

11 ) The method taught by awakened sages to develop this skillful mind of kindness is to cut the root of all selfish projections by repeatedly and intensively studying Perfect Wisdom, meditating single pointedly on its essence in a state of contemplative stillness and stability. With the clarity and honesty of such concentration, projected worlds of self-serving desire will melt in the sunlight of meditation, like structures of ice, revealing the magnificent secret of our existence, its total significance and absolute justification, which is active compassion for all conscious life.

12 ) Such meditative practice brings to light the mind which envisions only the well-being of others, which is constantly grateful to all beloved beings for the immeasurable kindness they have poured forth through beginningless time as mothers, fathers, children, friends, benefactors, and teachers. This mind of goodness knows only the ceaseless longing to benefit all these blessed beings without exception in whatever manner and on whatever level imaginable.

13 ) To remember vividly during every moment the kindness that has been expressed by all beings, and to cultivate an intense and constant longing to return even a small portion of this kindness, unveils the true significance of life in all worlds. The person who fails to respond wholeheartedly to this call for universal kindness and concern is on a lower plane of development than animals, who are capable of experiencing immense gratitude.

14 ) Those who unhesitatingly embrace and tenderly serve all suffering creatures during this degenerate age, just as a loving mother painstakingly cares for even the most wayward of her children, they alone are the teachers of the holy life who authentically walk the Buddha Way.

15 ) The mind that faithfully and tirelessly serves and elevates conscious beings is sheer goodness, constantly giving the gift of itself, its faith in ever-expanding goodness, to all other minds thereby benefiting them in the most direct way. Of all possible forms of benefit on any level, the highest is to teach this practice of love, this indomitable faith in universal goodness, by the direct transmission of selfless awareness flowing transparently from mind to mind in accordance with the need and capacity of each mind. This is true teaching, tangibly transmitting the living energy of universal goodness, which becomes perpetually active in the recipient, even during the most pressing times of crisis, never evaporating into mere words or concepts.

16 ) During this blissful practice, continually cultivating the wonderful, ever-expanding mind of goodness, even the slightest lack of sympathetic joy disappears and awareness becomes more concentrated and selfless, while the selfish emotions and conceptual projections which compose this narrow conventional world are gradually effaced, and we are completely liberated. The brilliant sun of Great Compassion shines unobstructed. The spirit of wholehearted love in every thought and action constitutes the spontaneously radiating sunlight, effortlessly melting the mist of self-centeredness, vastly strengthening our constant efforts for all beings.

17 ) Beings benefit each other, consciously or unconsciously. Even enemies become profound benefactors in subtle ways. Those who clearly perceive this radical principle find no isolated object for hostile thought. They can discover and encounter only friends, benefactors, and inseparably related beings. This insight avoids aggressive thinking and allows the mind to expand endlessly into wholesomeness, generosity, and sympathy.

18 ) Never offering the slightest encouragement to hostility, never hesitating to embrace the concerns of others, pay complete attention to every altruistic impulse that arises in the stream of pure awareness. Contemplate the teaching of selfless compassion, calming and clarifying the turbulent flood of egocentric mind with the sweetest meditation. Renounce the meaninglessness of selfish life. Become devoted to the true meaning of existence: the spontaneous, active compassion for all living beings. If one does not refute self-centered motivation, the subtle tendencies of the mind can never be free from the gross or subtle disposition to negation.

19 ) Transform the intense activity of daily life into the harmonious expression and teaching of truth by affectionately reminding and being reminded that the bitter dark fruits of negating others are poisonous, to be most carefully avoided, while the sweet bright fruits of affirming others are life-giving, to be thoroughly enjoyed. Authentic delight exists only in serving others, and suffering springs only from harming others or insensitively ignoring the needs of living beings, all of whom are as intimately related to us as our own precious mother and father.

20 ) So sensitive an ecology is the interdependence of all, that the slightest attention and assistance to others creates moral elevation for ourselves and humanity, while the slightest indifference or neglect toward others creates moral harm for ourselves and our civilization. The faintest spark of ill will toward other beings can burst forth into a terrible forest fire, consuming vast expanses of sympathetic joy. Even the faintest negative reaction or malicious wish opens wide channels throughout our entire being for life-destroying poisons of negation and life-obscuring shadows of self-cherishing.

21 ) Cast far away from all precious humanity these lethal doses, these ominous shadows, by cultivating instinctive admiration and love for those who practice the way of selflessness. Adore such bodhisattvas for their irreversible vow to remain intimate with the struggle of living beings as beacons of love and as the light of panoramic vision.

22 ) Once identified with this luminous way of life, you will experience every moment as soaked in bliss, tasting the delight of compassionate responses to even the most negative actions of other beings. I have composed this poem of rapturous affection further to strengthen the diamond-sharp conviction of those already faithful to the path of wisdom.

23 ) Gazing back over these exuberant verses, I perceive an abundant banquet of poetry, easy to assimilate and to understand clearly. Entirely in accord with the teaching of the sutras and with the deep realization of awakened sages, these words are full of subtle nourishment. To contemplate their various levels of meaning is not only to taste the nectar of wisdom but is to walk the sublime path of compassion.

24 ) This surprising poem condenses into a few verses the profound and extensive teachings of my lineage. I have composed these melodic lines, like heavenly wish-fulfilling gems, to benefit the minds of all beloved beings. Those with strong capacity for meditation in action will deepen their insight into the nature of Reality by following these words into the heart of Buddha.

25 ) Some authors tie complex knots of philosophical terms, while others rave incoherently like mad persons. In the most beautiful hermitage, the snow mountains of Tibet, this poet, known as Ever-Expanding Mind of Goodness, has attempted to write with richness and lucidity.
